Proposal outline:	Studying the molecular bases of common and specific effect caused by biotic stress on plants represented by the parasitism of plant parasitic nematodes and abiotic stress represented by drought. Main consideration would be targeted on sedentary nematodes that belong to cyst- and root-knot nematodes on A. thaliana, sugar beet and tomatoes. Hight through put methods would be put in use to investigate the over all changes that mark the effect of these stresses.

Proposal outline :	Our group is studying temporal changes in biodiversity of main crops and relating these with climate and social proxies. For the purpose of this call we want to screen genome-wide markers (SNPs, SSRs) in under-studied materials such as: 1) historic collections held at museums and germplasm banks; 2) landrace accessions; 3) wild progenitors; 4) elite breeds. Furthermore, we aim to apply next-generation-sequencing technologies to screen a high number of genes annotated in model genomes (such as Arabidopsis or Brachipodium) and known to be associated with adaptation to environmental factors such as temperature, salinity, day-length, etc. We will then relate allelic differences in these accessions to their geographic and historic context in order to investigate the genomic mechanisms underlying crop adaptation to distinct environmental settings, both in a spatial and temporal scale. We have experience in the analysis of these materials in wheat, barley and rye, but are interested in expanding these methods to legumes, fruit or other cereals. The data generated by such endeavour can be of use to the plant breeding industry and to inform sound agricultural policies towards system resilience in the face of climatic changes.
Type of collaboration sought :	We are looking for groups with experience in the analysis of next-generation sequence data and bioinformatics. Groups involved in the identification of genes underlying crop adaptations would be welcome. We have wide expertise in SNP and SSR data, population genetics and the analysis of historic materials. Proposal outline :	Contrary to our simplistic vision and approaches, plants in the field are never just diseased but they are struggling against simultaneous biotic and abiotic stresses. Thus our understanding of disease resistance is limited to situations that almost never occur in nature. Only few studies have attempted to determine the mechanistic effects of abiotic change on host-pathogen interactions. While the impact of temperature on disease resistance is well-studied, many biotic/abiotic negative interactions still need to be better understood at the molecular level. The major goal of this proposal would be to identify in model plants (Arabidopsis and rice), genes that confer robust resistance to pathogens even under adverse abiotic constraints (eg drought, temperature, fertilization…). To achieve these goals, four main WP could be undertaken: (1) setting-up biological systems for combinational stresses, (2) reverse genetics (RNASeq to get to both plant and the pathogen biology), (3) forward genetics (mutant screen and sequencing) and (4) proof-of-concept that the genes identified in model plants can be used in other crops like wheat and tomato.

Call Information :	Improving recombination in cereals to introduce new variability
Proposal outline :	Improving cereal yield in a context of sustainable agriculture and with an increasing impact of climate change relies on the exploration and exploitation of genetic resources in order to identify and use original new powerful alleles at the genes of agronomical interest. However, introduction of new alleles in the genome of cereals needs that the homologous (or homoeologous when different species are considered) chromosomes pair properly and recombine. Homologous and homoeologous pairing in cereals like barley and wheat are controlled by numerous genes among which several are located on homoeologous group 3 (3H, 3A, 3B, 3D). The aim of the project is to use the data that have been recently produced for these two species (whole genome sequence for barley and chromosome survey and sequence of chromosome 3B for wheat) to identify and clone the genes that impact chromosome pairing and that have been found on theses chromosomes.
Type of collaboration sought:	We expect to find collaborators that are developing researches on recombination in wheat and/or barley and that have knowledge in cytogenetics to follow chromosome pairing during meiosis. We are also seeking for laboratories having a good background in recombination (genes involved). We already have facilities and skills for bioinformatics analyses and we can easily access to all the resources that have been developed for wheat and barley.
